March 3, 2008 - Last Minute travel stuff
If you buy wine in the duty free, make sure that you tell them you are flying to Finland and they should put them in sealed plastic bags. This ensures that they won't be taken from you when you connect in Ivalo.
March 2, 2008 - Birdwatching
I was asked about the birds that might be possible to spot in Lapland and I came across the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fauna_of_Finland It includes various birds and animals that you might be able to see, but the birds include:
- bats
- herons
- ducks
- grouse and pheasants
- various birds of prey including falcons and kestrels
- pigeons
- owls
- swifts
- woodpeckers
February 27, 2008 - Electricity
Hi Guys. Just a quick point that you will need a standard european adapter to use any uk electrical item while we are in Lapland. This just needs to convert our 3 pin plug into a standard european 2 pin plug. These can usually be purchased from the airport if necessary.
February 24, 2008 - Lapland is rising
Another random question I was asked was in relation to Lapland’s sea height - seemingly its rising! Never one to turn down a challenge - Lapland is indeed still rising…
“The rest of the country is also still emerging from the sea. The weight of the continental glaciers depressed the land over which they moved, and even now, a hundred centuries after their recession, Finland is rising up from this great load through the process of isostatic rebound. In the south and the southwest, this process is occurring slowly, at a rate of twenty-five to thirty centimeters a century. Farther north in the Ostrobothnia area, uplift is more rapid, it amounts to eighty or ninety centimeters a century. The process also means that Finland is growing about seven square kilometers yearly as land emerges from the sea.”
February 22, 2008 - Distance to the North Pole
I was recently asked the question about approximate distance from our location in Lapland to the North Pole. For those of you considering the trip, I would suggest either a plane or helicopter due to the sea distance that you have to cover. The approximate distance is 1299.1 nautical miles “Great Circle Distance”. Please see below for a definition of Great Circle Distance.
“A great circle is defined as a circle on the earth’s surface the plane of which passes through the centre of the earth. For navigation purposes :
- The great circle track is the shortest distance between two places on the earth’s surface.
- The great circle track appears as a straight line on Gnomonic (great circle) charts.
- The vertices of a great circle are the two points nearest to the poles which have a course on the great circle track due EAST / WEST. “
“To follow a great circle track, the navigator needs to adjust the ship’s course continuously because the great circle track is a curve when plotted on a Mercator Chart. Therefore, it is not really practicable to sail on an exact great circle route. In order to take advantage of the shorter steaming distance of the great circle track, mariners usually divide a great circle track between the initial position and the destination into smaller segments (way points) of about one to two day’s steaming time and make course adjustment at noon.”
